The state is diverse because its students hail from a wide variety of racial, ethnic, and economic backgrounds. It is segregated because students of different backgrounds generally attend different s The-Impact-of-Middle-School-Integration-Efforts-on-Segregation-in-Two-New-York-City-Districtschools. The state's diversity, however, gives it potential to integrate its schools. This is particularly true when students of different backgroundsThe-Impact-of-Middle-School-Integration-Efforts-on-Segregation-in-Two-New-York-City-Districts
live relatively close to one another, as is frequently the case in the state's largest municipality: New York City.To address segregation, both the stThe Impact of Miuuie OCI1UO1 Integration Efforts on Segregation in Two New York City DistrictsBy Jesse Margolis, Daniel Dench, and Shirin HashimExecut The-Impact-of-Middle-School-Integration-Efforts-on-Segregation-in-Two-New-York-City-Districts integration plans in two of the most segregated conununity school districts in New York City: District 3 in Manhattan and District 15 in Brooklyn. Both school districts adopted controlled choice programs to prioritize economically disadvantaged students for admission into sixth grade in 2019-20. First. District 15 dropped academic screens from all middle schools, while The-Impact-of-Middle-School-Integration-Efforts-on-Segregation-in-Two-New-York-City-Districts District 3 retained them. While District 3's plan seems similar to District 15's on the surface - both implemented a controlled-choice plan to prioritize economically disadvantaged students for admission into middle school in 2019-20 - variations in the design led to very different results. While the results in Dis The-Impact-of-Middle-School-Integration-Efforts-on-Segregation-in-Two-New-York-City-Districtstrict 3 and 15 are important, these two districts enroll less than 2% of the public school students in New York State.
